So what is Congruent Communication?
"Sane Messages" is a way that keeps focus on what needs to be addressed without attacking a learners character or personality.
An example of this would be a learner that wont allow others to share opinions and keeps interupting others. Ginotts say's we could ask the whole group to allow everyone to share and get involved so we can learn from others.
This has addressed the issue the individual has created but it hasn't become confrontational or personal.

Hami Ginott was a professor of psychology and a former elementary school teacher.
Ginott's Comgruent Communication theory is based on his belief that the behavior and language of the instructor sets the tone for learning in the classroom.

Ginotts believes that by address a group of learners rather than the individual you can keep a harmonious environment rather than creating hostility. This can create a thriving learning environment built through mutual respect.
How does this impact my teaching?
By exploring new theories and theorist I hope to challenge my own practise, values and beliefs. I always want to improve my teaching and the way in which I communicate with others. This research has allowed me the opportunity to use some of my own interest in order to promote learning and to stretch and challenge myself and learners. Communication comes in many different forms, talking, sign language, braille, newspapers, social media and many more. One of the biggest ways to engage people today is by using technology. The fast pace lifestyle and the visual benefits of 4k screens and ever evolving technology means we can reach out to people in different ways.
I decided that using a QR code within my poster allows me to make my display more visual with less information but still allow people to read my work and findings using their devices when they have the time to access it and concentrate.
Through the creation of this poster, I have been able to plan and deliver effective lessons and take some of the new-found knowledge into the placements I currently have. Updating my knowledge of educational research and demonstrating theoretical understanding of effective practice in teaching are 2 of the teaching standards (2014) I have directly achieved in the research and planning stages.
Looking at the standards throughout the planning, developing and creation of the poster has been helpful to me as I continue to develop my own style, skills and knowledge. I always try to be aware of them, but some of the standards defiantly feel more relevant to this assignment than others. To reflect on my teaching and learning to meet the needs of the learners, to inspire and motivate learners through enthusiasm and knowledge and building positive relationships are the standards I hope to achieve once I have received my feedback on my poster and findings.
I really like aspects of Ginott's theory around challenging the behaviour of the group and not the individual. I appreciate that within the classroom there will be many occasions where this will be the right way to approach behaviour. An example of this would be talking in class when they should be working independently or low-level rudeness such as answering back. This can serve as a reminder to the whole class rather than singling out the individual and attacking them directly which could result in confrontation.
I do have concerns that some learners could not necessarily understand that they are doing something wrong. This can be because of reasons such cultural differences, lack of understanding and social influences. Society can play a part in the development of an individual and this reminds me of Bronfenbrenner (2009) who says that an individual must learn how to be sensitive to others, learn skills and be motivated to in caring for others (p.53). His ecological systems theory looks at the wider influences in a ripple effect with the child at the centre. This is where I see some of these issues could go against Ginott (1972) who believes that you should talk to the situation not the personality and character. I think a more direct approach is needed sometimes and just a simple one to one private conversation around what is acceptable and what is not could serve as more beneficial as it could be a lack of understand or one of the other reasons previously mentioned that are causing the issue and would be addressed easily.
Whilst I have found positives and negatives with Ginott’s congruent communication theory I believe no one theory has the answer to everything and my aim is to adapt, reflect and improve my practice always with the best interest of the learners at the centre, whilst creating my own style.

Communication Joke
If you ever get locked out of your house, why should you talk to your lock calmly ?
Because communication is key... ;-)
